Losing Duvall and Wiseman on the same day is kind of extra sad, because they were two men whose work was so suffused with curiosity, and an ability to reveal humanity, in a way that spoke to it’s most caring, loving aspects, even when they were revealing the darkness. A lot of love in all that work.

Most people know Do-yeong, but I’ve seen him play so little lately that I’ve fallen for another young shortstop that could be (somewhat unfairly) described as Do-yeong lite: Ju-won Kim. At 23, Kim is a speed/power combo with a much stronger glove than Do-yeong.

Waiting to get my haircut so I felt like highlighting some fun position players to watch on Team Korea. First, the most obvious is Do-yeong Kim. Recently ranked as the best international hitting prospect by Fangraphs (with an MLB eta of 2030), Kim won the KBO MVP in 2024.

The Kt Wiz beat Melbourne 8-7. Their young lineup, led by second round pick Kang-min Lee’s three hits (and first pro homer), put up 16 hits against the Aces.

Seo-hyeon Kim, strangely left off the WBC roster, struck out the side in his first 2026 appearance.

This is probably the dagger for Team Korea. Won was the best pitcher left on an already severely depleted and inexperienced squad.

Hanwha’s fleet-footed rookie, Jae-won Oh, had a day in Melbourne. Three hits, a run, an RBI, and two fine defensive plays. Oh’s professional career is off to a fine start with four hits in two games in Australia.

No Ha-seong, Sung-mun, and Dong-ju hurts, but this team has the talent to advance. I don’t love putting fringe MLB players just because they have big league experience, but alas.

The KBO all-time hits leader, Ah-seop Son, resigns with the Eagles. Son is 382 hits away from 3000. Son has only once had fewer than 140 hits in a season where he plays over 115 games. At 37, the milestone is within reach.

Korea might leave Taek-yeon Kim, Dong-ju Moon, and Seo-hyun Kim off the national team for the WBC. Would be a massive disappointment for people not to be able to see Korea’s best young arms on a bigger stage.
