Indeed. While I’m very glad more death was avoided tonight…Trump is going to think it worked, and we are likely to see him try this again. Each time he tries, he gets closer to actually doing it. He has to be removed from power by Congress.

What we fail to say is also a message. Not calling for Trump's impeachment and removal conveys he has not committed offenses that warrant these actions. Or, at best, that you feel he has and are unwilling to do your duty and use the remedy written into our Constitution for presidential crimes.

Just need to point out that it is not human shields if it isn't a lawful target...! Under LOAC it can be permissible to strike an otherwise lawful target despite the presence of human shields, so this sounds like Trump trying to make it look like Iran is in the wrong when the US hits power plants.

I hate the too-cool-for-school attitude of dismissing this with a "but they won't." That is surrendering in advance. The pressure should be put on them, the message should be unrelenting that this is what must be done and they're the ones refusing to do it. Don't act like they don't have agency.

FWIW I do not think that Trump will use a nuke. There is still massive damage that can be done by illegally striking civilian infrastructure, especially water supplies. That could trigger Iranian strikes on Gulf states' desalinization plants, which would be catastrophic for many countries.

Tehran's got a population of 15 million and is in the middle of a severe resource crisis. A conventional strike can kill millions of people in very slow and painful ways and I wish we could talk about that instead of jumping to the worst thing we can think of and getting freaked out about it.

fwiw, none of the targets Trump has been threatening to destroy (oil/water/energy/bridge infrastructure, etc.) require nukes. Trump's aversion to nukes + CENTCOM being more than happy to suggest conventional alternatives makes me think nuclear use remains very unlikely.
