If you’re serious about ideas it’s pretty safe to just never say yes to a “debate.” Serious people use different words to describe what they’re allegedly aiming for.

There was a vogue for climate debates along these same lines a decade or so back. And for evolution/creationism before that. With very few exceptions, these formats are stacked against the mainstream position. I recommend not doing them (and yes, I speak from experience).

I called my local hospital today and I’m working on a letter. I found out when the hospital district board meets and I’ll be there. Parents of trans kids and trans adults can’t fight this alone. The rest of us have to fight for trans kids.

“Being sick all the time” is the cost of having kids for most people, but when “sick” includes measles and shit, that cost is a lot higher. And then there’s the cost for kids.

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

Break something indeed. It's only tricky to elevate care work and caregiving while trying to lighten caregiver's burdens if you assume families in general and women in particular are preordained to do all or nearly all care.

This thread is very worth reading. I would add - the OP's argument that eugenics to produce "desired genetic characteristics" is broadly fine really relies on nobody pausing to ask what a 'desired genetic characteristic' is and why we desire them

When I’m doing formal stuff in demography I still sometimes cite papers from Eugenics Quarterly because some of what was called eugenics was *good* science. The position that “eugenics is bad” is not about science - it’s about morality.

Historian of eugenics here. I don't normally like to retweet bad arguments, but this is such a fundamental misunderstanding of eugenics, I think it's important to point out. I don't have time to debunk all of the ways this is inaccurate, but I'll highlight a few things and then recommend some books🧵
