a good way to combat this (although not fool proof because the algorithm really does suck ass) is to write extremely insightful takes on games if you’re leaving a positive review - i think people are often not inclined to list a positive review as helpful because they’re rarely detailed anyways

If nearly everyone is being positive about something, the one guy who's 'saying it like he is' must clearly have a point. Everyone wants to believe that they're the enlightened child telling the emperor that he is, in fact, naked. More often than not, it's just someone being a weird grumpy hater.

RE that RT.. it’s wild how steam reviews are still so damn important to getting visibility. If you play and like indie games, the most generous and helpful thing you can do is spend an hour popping positive reviews onto anything you like with <500 or so reviews.

Even on hugely popular games with 95%+ Steam user review scores, you will almost always see some interminable, essay-length negative rant flagged as the 'most useful' and put front and center on the store page. Part of it is Steam's upvoting system being busted. Part is human nature being stupid.
