In 1974, at the Treasure Isle studio, Soul Syndicate drummer 'Santa' Davis developed the flying cymbal sound with guitarist 'Chinna' Smith adding his distinctive licks. This Johnny Clarke 7" is one of my favourite flyers...

Last night, my hometown of Portland, Maine stood up to Live Nation. Amid strong grassroots opposition, the city council voted 6-3 for a moratorium ā a key step in stopping this monopolist from building a large venue and taking control of live music in our city.

Happy 81st birthday to the legendary Jimmy Cliff. Here's King Of Kings, which he wrote and recorded when he was still just a teenager starting out in the music business with producer Leslie Kong back in the early 1960s...

One of my most beloved hidden gems from the Holy Mountain catalogue, an unholy melding of Skaters-style tape gunk, black metal ambiance and shot through with an icy vein of new age from the great and sadly gone Sam Mehran.

RIP, John Whitson, who founded one of the world's greatest indie labels, Holy Mountain. He released essential records by Six Organs Of Admittance, Om, Davis Redford Triad, Wooden Shjips, Daniel Higgs, Zomes, and many others. For 30 years, he ran HM and never compromised his lofty vision.

There are so many good reasons to mourn Johnāhe was an aestheteās aesthete and one of the funniest people who ever livedābut the fact that no one will ever again make me laugh hysterically by making a gratuitous conversational reference to Og Mandino is surely one of them.
