RIP, John Whitson, who founded one of the world's greatest indie labels, Holy Mountain. He released essential records by Six Organs Of Admittance, Om, Davis Redford Triad, Wooden Shjips, Daniel Higgs, Zomes, and many others. For 30 years, he ran HM and never compromised his lofty vision.

There are so many good reasons to mourn John—he was an aesthete’s aesthete and one of the funniest people who ever lived—but the fact that no one will ever again make me laugh hysterically by making a gratuitous conversational reference to Og Mandino is surely one of them.

JW was bugging me for years to make a Les Rallizes Dénudés dub album. When I expressed concern about the legality of such an endeavor he said “fuck it, we’ll just press 1000 and stick them in black sleeves.” The best.
