There is not much here... yet. There will be a website... at some point. But if you like fantasy (and sci-fi), adventures in the bronze age, political shenanigans, and immortal twinks, maybe you want to stick around.

In ancient Mesopotamia, astronomers needed to know the moonβs position, even on a cloudy night. So they made records and calculations of the moonβs positions and velocity measured in degrees. This record from Uruk or Babylon from the Seleucid period covers 248 days. πΈ by Dr K. Wagensonner

I'm always confused when writers change the plot because a reader figured out what was coming. Surely that's good? Surely that means the breadcrumbs have been laid out appropriately?

Well this 2,600-year-old clay letter was a journey. It comes from the archive of a goldsmith named NabΓ»-zeru-iddin in the heart of ancient Assyria. Weβve got someone left on read, a lawsuit, a mean step-mom, and people who get drunk and steal silver.

There are always going to be people who, sincere or otherwise, want all art to conform to their controlling bland "manager policing their workers' bodily autonomy" perspective. And it's important to shut those people out in the cold and create art of wild indulgence and freako obsessions π€

People are laughing at the aioli-scented book, but smell is one of the things that e-books can never give you: a core sense that evokes strong memories and emotions, a hunger for skinny fries and dipping sauce, a deep desire to visit your favourite eatery, and even a covid test

In Babylon: Mesopotamia and the Birth of Civilization by Paul Kriwaczek, he notes that the potterβs wheel predated the wheel being used for transportation. The need for vessels was more urgent than the need for a new form of locomotion. It made me think of LeGuinβs Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction:

Becoming increasingly clear weβre gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Unfortunately incorrect: this had nothing to do with parking and everything to do with a type of building creep. When buildings were torn down and rebuilt, new builds often encroached and built over existing road infrastructure, narrowing the street's width. Sennacherib set up steles to stop that.

You used the Mercator projection for this? Really?? Didn't even bother to center the section on the equator? Chopped out Antarctica so the Mediterranean is in the middle? This isn't a brilliant map, this is a TERRIBLE map.

Even worse, Sauron controlled what Denethor saw. He was the algorithm, so to speak. If Denethor had seen a more broad and balanced range of things through the Palantir, he might not have gone mad. He only saw doom coming, not hope.

started on Facebook which spilled onto real life yesterday, I'm now also thinking about what, besides word count, makes a novella a novella. The engineer in me thinks it mostly has to do with the story-load bearing capacity of the format...(1/4)

Saying this again: there is a scammer out there targeting newbie authors, claiming I'm one of their clients. They use different names, and I'm already pursuing legal action. But I have never worked with a PR company, editing service, or book packager, so anybody saying so is lying, period full stop.

This is totally alien to me. For most of the people in my life, giving advice is part of normal conversation. Sometimes it's annoying, but usually there is some other annoying behaviour that goes with it (e.g. overly nosey relative). Sometimes advice is unwanted, which is fine too.
