So happy that the Macedonian film DJ AHMET is opening in the U.S. this weekend. I hope it doesn’t entirely slip through the cracks. It straddles crowd-pleasing charm and a compelling, culturally specific coming-of-age story. One of my faves at Sundance ‘25. My review:

Thrilled to make my debut at A Rabbit’s Foot in their latest, gorgeous print issue on California with an essay about a handful of movies that portray LA as a dark and enigmatic (and bloody) place for those who come here seeking go become stars. Welcome to Los Angeles: Be Careful.

Bucket list interview for me. For the NYT I talked to French animation legend Sylvain Chomet, whose first animated feature in 15 years, A MAGNIFICENT LIFE, opens this week. So happy to hear he is already working on his next animated film. Read here:

Before you decide to comment on the situation in Mexico, remember that the criminal organizations there obtain their guns from the U.S. and that that the U.S. is the main consumer for their products.

For LA Times, I wrote about why sequels and an aversion to taking risks have rendered most Hollywood animated features far less compelling in comparison to their international counterparts. And even when they make an interesting one, it rarely hits theaters:

Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.
