A lot of “cinephiles” don’t care for animation. They don’t watch it, they don’t write about it. They still see it as a lesser medium, so it’s not surprising that some people are upset about KPOP DEMON HUNTERS being added to Criterion. I hope Criterion adds more animated films.

Last night I had the honor of moderating a Q&A with director Kaouther Ben Hania after a screening of her sobering, Oscar-nominated film THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB. It was so moving to hear the film has played in Gaza, as part of a humble festival put together amid the destruction.

I was really moved seeing this people on Main Street during Sundance protesting ICE. The fact that they are standing out in the cold with signs as tons of people pass by means a lot to me. Its symbolic, but made me feel s little less hopeless.

They hate us immigrants so much they are willing to kill those who they should see as “their own” in order to continue the cruelty. Truly evil.

Happy to report it was worth it to wake up so early to see Gregg Araki’s I WANT YOUR SEX. Loved it. The most fun I’ve had at the festival: raunchy, unexpected, insightful. Easily one of the best performances in Olivia Wilde’s career. Stayed for the Q&A to hear from Araki himself.

It’s early, but the best #Sundance film I’ve seen so far is Beth de Araújo’s JOSEPHINE, a potent drama about an 8-year-old who witnesses an assaults.
