FWIW, fits my experiences exactly. Granted, me and my friends weren’t in the 80s.

Talked to my son's best friend's mom who, I would guess, speaks better Chinese than English. I took two weeks of Chinese in 2005. Translation apps open up worlds that were not open a handful of years ago. Translating works of art, is a work of art. Let's leave that to the artists.

Genuinely worried that writing books is going to be like the Olympics (if you test for doping you are automatically disqualified even if it was cold medicine). I don't think art should work like that. Art is like sports in some ways but not quite in that way.

I'd go a step further. There's nothing inherently unethical about language models (ie LMs vs LLMs). You can do so much just by mapping the relationships between words on data in the public domain. You don't need to steal and replace artists. You also don't need a little robot to talk to.

Until we reach some kind of actual immortality, we've got to be okay letting people die.

I really don't get the whole "robot maid" thing. *If* AI takes off (enough to make humanoid robots work) there will be plenty of unemployed people willing to clean your house for much less than the price of metal and lithium batteries. I guess tech overlords might prefer robots to poor people
