While I am genuinely concerned for my colleagues who are doctors currently on H1B visas, I acknowledge that I can't make people care about other humans. But American *should* care about the fact that their ability to get medical care WILL be affected by these visa restrictions.

I have a lot of issues with people getting information solely through short-form video content (cue the Gen-Z hate), but it doesn’t seem like that trend is stopping anytime soon. I am going to try to reach people over on TikTok. Here are the first 3 minutes of one I just made. 🧪

I don't get how anyone can possibly be okay with ending the WHI. This study has accrued decades of data from 42000 women and it is still going. It helps to address critical research gaps that have been allowed to go unfilled because of durable misogyny and provides invaluable insight into aging.

For those who don't know a K01 is a training grant for early career researchers. Typically 4-5years to help them launch their research careers. It protects up to 75% time for research. Rescinding awarded K level grants is throwing a grenade into an already tenuous research pipeline.

This type of grant, a K01, is the first major NIH grant for an early career researcher. Early career in this case means someone who has already completed all their education. This type of grant often reflects a decade or more of education and prior research.

Veterans have, by law, preferential hiring in the federal government. Disabled veterans get higher preference. Among other things, it's a pipeline to help them adjust post-service. So if you're roasting all the new hires, you're roasting a lot of veterans, with a lean towards disabled vets.

New: Project 2025, which Russell Vought is the architect of, advocates for cutting NIH funding. But, it has been NIH-funded research that contributed to Vought’s own daughter having better treatment options for cystic fibrosis.

🧵 The CDC's recent directive to remove all articles that mention DEI terms INCLUDING "gender" is more than concerning. Understanding the distinction between sex and gender is critical, including for chronic diseases. An example in axial spondyloarthritis:

One of the hardest skills to develop in medicine—one that simply cannot be learned from books and must be taught and encouraged by example—is the ability to take a step back and say “Wait a minute, that doesn’t make any god damn sense.”

Recently finished The Women by Kristin Hannah — the narrative of women veterans from the Vietnam era is rarely told, and especially compelling if you’ve ever worked with women veterans. Recommend this one, even if the romance is a bit cheesy.
