I am happy to announce that we received major funding from Schmidt Sciences under their VICC program to study rapid #Permafrost Thaw Carbon Trajectories (PeTCaT). The 5-year project led by my team @awi.de partners with an international team to quantify how rapid thaw contributes to climate change.

What do we mean by abrupt permafrost thaw? This site above the permafrost tunnel in Alaska had no evidence of a sinkhole in this spot last fall. This thermokarst pit formed in the past several months, large enough for Hailey Webb, who made the discovery, to climb down into it.

No #fieldwork this year, so time to look back. 2017 was my fieldwork at the #Batagay Megaslump in #Siberia, the largest known retrogressive thaw slump on earth. A prime example of abrupt #permafrost thaw that exposes ancient permafrost. In two photographs, see ellipses with people for scale.

1/2 When you think of the Ice Age, volcanoes might not come to mind, but in our opinion they totally should. When volcanos erupt, they send ash, pumice, and other debris into the sky. These materials, called tephra, settle into distinct layers that can be preserved in soil for thousands of years.

Our team, led by Anton Vaks, have just put out this rather lovely manuscript in Nature Comms showing that the northern hemisphere was permafrost free during a period when temperatures were ca. 4.5 degrees warmer - similar to runaway climate change. Have a look! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
