Marjane Satrapi has left. AFP quoted a "member of her close circle" as saying she had "died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life." Absolutely devastating loss of a brilliant artist and brave soul. Her art remains.

RIP Marjane Satrapi, 1969-2026 For many years, I assigned Persepolis by Satrapi in a fourth year undergraduate seminar I teach on Iran. A brilliant, nuanced, touching, funny graphic novel about her life in Iran, the revolution & exile, it was always much appreciated by students.

That Ahmadinejad was perhaps disgruntled and voiced criticism -OK. But beyond that? The plan was to free him and then he would somehow have networks and people inside the IRGC to stage a coup? Hard to fathom.

Maybe find an example of a country that did submit under these kind of pressures and attacks first? Even one? Because the general pattern seems to be that these campaigns cause tremendous human suffering and then fail, over and over and over again.

The US government’s negotiators are a bunch of sophists trained on debate team party tricks. Fundamentally unserious. Ghalibaf, on the other hand, is a Brigadier General and veteran of the Iran-Iraq war with a PhD in political geography. In other words, a serious person.
