Some uplifting lunchtime reading. Things seem lousy now. But we’ve been through far worse. Memorial Day originally honored the dead of the Civil War—which vastly exceeded the violence of today. We face dangers, but we should put them in perspective.

Memorial Day originally honored the Civil War dead. For Throwback Thursday before Memorial Day, I re-up a post from 8 years ago, when there was talk of another Civil War. Things seem pretty lousy, but I still don't think true Civil War is coming.

Obviously there are a lot of reasons why antisemitism has become such a big force in US politics, but I think the fact that "socialist" ideas are so often transmitted through parasocial, online-mediated agitprop instead of mass organization makes the socialism of fools all but inevitable.

However appalled you are by this, it’s not enough. It’s a frank statement that Trump and Trumpists are above the law and need not even plausible excuses to loot your tax dollars. It’s a total failure of our civic institutions.

VP Vance added Cliff Sims as a new national security adviser to his team. Sims is a skilled communications pro, w/limited national security experience. This has implications for Vance—but it also illuminates what is important in the Trump White House.

Seeing commencement speakers booed when they mention AI was not surprising. But it also wasn’t inevitable. The tech companies have failed to build public trust, so that when things started to go wrong there was a harsh public backlash. Thead 1/x

As your day winds down, or your evening begins, here are my thoughts on staff changes in the Office of the Vice President. Not headline news, but an indicator of how things work in this White House, who is up and who is down!

VP Vance has a new national security, who doesn’t have a lot of foreign policy experience. The appointment says a lot about what is most valuable in the Trump White House and how the process is working. Also, what’s up with the bird pic? Well, read on!

This is their favorite move: 1. Advocate for an extremist belief or position. 2. Then pretend to be the victim when they get called on it. The term “Christian nationalism” isn’t new - it’s just been a long time since it was this prominent.

: Israel is a real place with real people. Attempting to dehumanize them will only make the conflict go in longer. But the basic lesson that other places are not stereotypes or surfaces for your projections is all-important and universally applicable.

Need some thought-provoking evening reading? Check out my latest on the role US VPs have played in this critical bilateral relationship. A bilateral VP-VP channel could be helpful, Mexico doesn’t have a Veep! More on that coming soon.

As VP Al Gore played a major role in US-Mexican relations. But he wasn’t the only VP to do! Many modern Veeps have engaged with Mexico. But there’s a surprising early VP who shaped US policy toward Mexico.

Thanks to Trump we are talking about how past presidents would do in a fight against an average American. I’ve extended the analysis to vice presidents. Just a warning, if you thrown down with a Veep, most will prove to be tough customers.

The majority of Americans think they could take Donald Trump in a fight according to a recent survey. The next question (for Veepologists) is how various VPs would do in a brawl. Some of them are tough customers!

Big VP stuff coming. Tomorrow for Cinco de Mayo we’ll discuss why Mexico doesn’t have a VP. It's also the minor Jewish holiday Lag B’Omer, a milestone in the count of days (the Omer) between Passover (celebrating freedom) and Shavuot (celebrating the law.)

1. This is big. It was clear before that SPLC was collecting intelligence on the “Unite the Right” rally in 2017 because of the threat of violence. Now, a new filing from SPLC cites an “Event Alert” the group provided directly to the FBI. This alert undermines the DOJ’s corrupt case.

Seems timely to re-up my analysis of assassination attempts of VPs. Interesting contrast that these attempts had coherent political motives. Attempts on the presidents are often by disturbed people acting alone. Regardless, political violence is a bad.
