Comparing the old algo vs the new

I just learned about the ITU-R BT.709 standard for calculating perceived luminance values. I've updated Stipple Studio to use the new formula. What do you think, is it better?

I threw away 3 days of work on my old design. It wasn't fitting for me and I couldn't get it to feel right no matter how much I tinkered with it. Now I have created this incredibly simple design. I will be adding some fun interactive effects later.
