Spurred on by new pterosaur paper. I‘ve been meaning to draw something like this for a while now and I wanted to get it down on paper. Pretty rough, may or may not clean it up later on.

The #DorsetMuseum is really great. They have original notebooks from Mary Anning and several famous holotypes from the area out for people to see.

My prediction is that this scene is going to be a "predators want to avoid injury" scene like we've seen in the show before, which is reasonable. The sabercat will scuffle with that one otter, and if the two others join, they'll probably drive the cat off.

And of course, with its broad, serrated canines (and even incisors!), Homotherium was armed with a bite more destructive than a typical conical-toothed carnivoran's.

So did Enhydriodon have retractile claws or not? Honestly, I don't know, although it looks like it's a possibility(?). Either way, it's not improbable for an otter to use its front paws to hold onto a prey/food item, though how raptorial they are is questionable.

As for Enhydriodon, it had finger bones with a space that may have allowed the claw to rest itself in when retracted, similar to cats. This was interpreted as evidence for retractile claws, but Enhydra, which DOES have retractile claws, does not have this.

and less powerful than in pantherines, let alone Smilodon. Overall, although it wasn't the wrestler modern cats or its cousin Smilodon were, it was still a massive, strong animal that could at least subdue prey with its weight and a dog-like hold, sort of like a cheetah.

Homotherium (if this is what it is) was a weird animal in that it had adaptations to resist the forces of struggling prey, but it was also sort of cursorial. Its stiff back and hindlimbs were strong, but its forelimbs w/ reduced claws on digits 2-4 were less prehensile--

Gonna go Carnivora-mode for a sec: I know we animal enthusiasts generally like to be hype men for mustelids, but, at least 1v1, I still think the sabercat has a good chance. (It's just that this could very quickly turn into a 3v1 against the cat.)

grossness aside, the naming of bakiribu expands the taxonomic range of ctenochasmatids with filter-feeding adaptations, as it possesses long, thin, comb-like teeth very similar to its close relative pterodaustro

interestingly, both the holotype and paratype of bakiribu were found in what is interpreted as a carnivore regurgitalite - yes, vomit
