It's alarming how many people need to hear this: racism is not the natural and inevitable response to the presence of (the wrong number of) racialised Others. It is a learned response, and as such it is contestable and replaceable. This is anti-racism 101. Entry level stuff.

Should we be calling them in? I don't know. It feels like a distraction (shout out Toni Morrison). The people who wanted to march but didn't and who might now feel emboldened...can they be called in? What is all this for if not the belief that we all deserve freedom? And can we win without them?

It allows them to take zero responsibility for naming strengthening the border force as one of their key electoral promises and what role that played in normalising the idea of a 'mass immigration problem'

There's something unsettling in the tone of these politicians' statements celebrating the convictions and sentencing of the rioters. As if we can discipline and punish our way out of this situation.
