I notice that ‘straight’ news reporters and White House correspondents are all posting Trump’s ‘I’m glad he’s dead’ reaction to Mueller’s death with just a ‘here is the president’s response’. Very few acknowledgements of how insane and inappropriate it is for the president to respond like this.

Imagine how different everything would be had the U.S. enthusiastically embraced renewable energy back when Carter put solar panels on the White House or when James Hansen first testified about climate change before Congress in 1988. For one thing, over 150 Iranian schoolgirls would still be alive.

I always thought of speaking out or holding signs at a board of supervisors meeting as a no risk, no drama way to engage in democracy - but even this can land you in jail in the US today. We need more protest, not less. Timothy Snyder said: if you protest now, you will be able to protest later.

Peaceful protest makes our opposition visible, adds pressure or gives cover to electeds to do the right thing, invites those still on the sidelines to join in resisting, builds community which we need to get through hard times and much more.
