40 yrs ago today, French Secret Service agents bombed Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior in Auckland, killing beloved photographer Fernando Pereira. The ship and crew were preparing to protest French nuclear testing in the Pacific. It wasn't OK to attack peaceful protesters then and it isn't OK now.

On this day in protest history: April 24, 1968, students at Columbia University began a sit-in at Hamilton Hall to protest Columbia’s involvement in weapons research for the Vietnam War and its treatment of communities of color surrounding the campus. Columbia students continue this tradition today.

On the first Earth Day, in 1970, over 20 million people protested across the country. They marched, created art, held teach ins, pressured elected officials. In the following years, a slew of bedrock enviro laws were created. That is what happens when 20 million people protest for the planet.
