It’s been a while since I did a Midgard notebook video so here I take a look at Melee Combat with some standard and more unusual examples. Also a good excuse to get the Orcs and Elves out!

Some closeups of the HES Zierschnee, a patrol boat converted out of a WW2 corvette kit. It was great for this to take part in a battle and actually roll some dice after being a display piece for a year.

Imperial squad I painted back in the mid 90's, sculptor Mark Copplestone, think they were in a magazine around that time?! Great colour scheme, i'll have to use it again on some of my Diehard Miniatures figures! Classic Salamander green base ;)

A couple more games of Memoir 44–Mont Mouchet and Vassieux, Vercors; this time both German victories in partisan clearing operations behind the main line of contact.

Another game of Memoir 44 with my son tonight after having not played for a little while. Omaha Beach and a close game but eventually the Allies broke through.

Knurling nostalgia! In the same year at college I built not only a wearable beakie but also prototype crew helmets for UK Apache for the MOD/USAF. The former possibly the only cosplay ever to use real laminate kevlar. Don't get me started on how bloody difficult kevlar is to work with.

I love this bit of made for magazine, poster art, of space marines from when Space Crusade came out. I believe it was painted by Paul Kidby of discworld fame. It features a bunch of celebrity referenced characters and fem marines in a cool 'what could have been' bit of art.

My notes on what has changed in Chain of Command v2. Hopefully useful for players of v1 making the transition. It's not a review, just a list of changes to help remind me of what is new/different, but I thought I might as well share it.

This has been the most popular post on the blog for some time, with 40,000+ views. It seemed timely to give it a refresh and bring it up to speed for the publication of CoC v2. Warning: CoC veterans are unlikely to find much they haven’t seen before.

This is a Chinese temple for Back of Beyond games. I had a black and white photo of the exterior to use for reference and some of my own photos of Chinese temples in Malaysia, which I used to detail the temple front and the courtyard.

I don't often see our models out in the wild - we're not as cool as Warhammer or other manufacturers, so people don't seem to share them as often. However, I spotted this excellent 15mm Hammer's Slammers force over on Facebook so I felt I had to share it.

Also, the reason you even have Terminators who can be posed to throw hammers around the place is cos I showed John Blanche and Jes Goodwin these at Golden Demon 1994 and Jes informed me he'd been told that Terminators couldn't do that, I countered with 'reactive armour plates' and he grinned widely

Incidentally, the first Logan Grimnar in model form was seen in the Citadel Journal issue 20. Back then everyone who was anyone had back banners, and everything had red borders.

Memoir 44 today with my son — Pointe du Hoc. The Allies (my son) won despite not actually achieving their objectives of reaching the hidden guns they destroyed enough Germans to win, though the bunker on the Pointe itself remained undefeated.

I've been told I'm too shy about self promotion, so here is some. I design nostalgic 3D prints for wargaming that are easy to print on pretty much any FDM printer and need no supports, so there is no faffing about with support removal. Links to my stores below.

Basing and undercoating a mix of figures. Mainly old school Warzone but also a random mix of EM4, Foundry Judge Dredd, and Copplestone sci-fi along with some Hasslefree and classic GW. Doing some Warzone as a side project.

I got my copy of Midgard today. I have no immediate plans for it but later this year I would like to play a Warhammer game with it. Kudos to
@toofatlardies.bsky.social
for getting an Australian stockist which made an Antipodean purchase feasible and I hope CoC v2 is this high quality!

I get way more political crap here than I ever did on Twitter - it’s all just left wing instead of right wing - but no porn at all which is good. Twitter was fine for me I just carefully blocked and muted things I didn’t like until my feed was pretty much fine. Having to do the same here.

Have I caved in and come over to Bluesky? Unsure but I’ll give it a go for now even though I personally don’t have any problem with Twitter (carefully muting and blocking unwanted content seems to keep my personal algorithm more or less totally fine) and I like the format better than Bluesky.
