The idea for LAZARUS came from a completely random writing exercise and I could never have guessed it would take such a hold on me. But its mood is inspired by things like Blade Runner, Angel Heart, the Long Goodbye, Nightmare Alley, Let the Right One In, the Exorcist.

the danmei novel I Ship My Adversary x Me by PEPA was hugely inspiring for my writing. it taught me it's OK to use plentiful section breaks, a trait which i continue to write with! i used to number my sections like ISMM too, except i used decimals, but i've switched to using symbols/asterisks/emoji

The Secret History can be a meandering atmospheric piece bc the tension is established on pg 1. Richard is telling you how he killed a guy. Now he can say whatever & you’ll still pay attention. My WIP is in an interview style for the same reason. You know what’s coming. Now I can take my time.

#WritingPrompt One of my Horror short stories got picked up last year by a magazine. One of the things the editor worked with me to change was to make sure a character I killed off in the story had a purpose, and I wasn't just killing off people because I wanted to.

my editor for TVD was very good at detecting places where I was holding back for fear of addressing something in myself I didn't want to deal with / otherwise putting myself on display. among other things, I was avoiding writing directly about the hiking scene and the book was suffering for it.

So many! An easy one to describe from my WIP: she said, if Connor is actually close with his family, they should be mentioned before the 85 percent mark. They come out of nowhere. I added a few text exchanges and specific memories earlier, which raised the stakes for later. Wild.

all the restructuring notes @jonphaedrus.bsky.social gave me for MANNERS needed like 6 months of processing time and it's going to be so juicy @subvertebra.bsky.social basically told me that we both knew I could do better with OUR CRIMSON CAGE and yeah, he was right

My very kind editor asked me to basically re-write a favorite chapter of mine (the one with the stars & Jude if anyone's wondering), because it made absolutely no sense and lacked a lot of context. They were so right and the chapter reads sooo much better after that re-write.

I've worked with editors both good and bad at various publishers. The best editors will take the time to explain things, encourage as much as provide constructive feedback, and never belittle you or your writing. The suggestion I got was that you should learn and grow from each edit.

I've spoken about it before but my favourite suggestions from an editor was to cut the interlude from The Knowing Doll, which introduced a unique cast of characters and their way of life. They were plot and theme important but a major and jarring, one time, POV change late in the story.

as an editor i ended up editing my book myself, but the psychological difficulty of proofreading my book without beating myself up for every single error would have driven me mad if @subvertebra.bsky.social hadn't helped me isolate what was important for storytelling and what to let go

Both my novels have had professional editors and I've learned that I had a 7th graders grasp on correct punctuation. Just by going through the tracked changes I have a much better grasp on semicolons, thankfully! (Not exactly the question that was asked but it was the most shocking part, lol)

Got feedback from one with an indie publisher I didn’t end up going with about removing unnecessary detail - I ended up adding some back in. But ultimately a good reminder to be thoughtful about adding details that serve the plot and characters and skipping those that don’t

I have worked with an editor and the best thing I learned is that everyone NEEDS an editor. Even the best of us need someone to (lovingly, constructively) rein them in & tell them no. There is a fine line between a complex vision & incomprehensible mush. It’s hard to know the difference alone.
