My neighbor’s kid is always singing the “Let It Go” Frozen song at the moment and as a fan of free music, I couldn’t be happier.

One thing that sets music apart from other art forms is that you can listen to two pieces of music simultaneously. With other forms, you can alternate between two, but you can’t easily read two books at the exact same moment and you can’t focus on two different paintings at the same time.

If you’ve only read the Taylor Swift lyrics but haven’t actually listened to the songs, you’re not getting that it’s mostly done spoken-word through an octave down pitch shifter over 180bpm supersaw arpeggios and gabber kicks, and honestly works really well.

I’m not trying to emotionally manipulate anyone but maybe artists should think about how sounds feel about the fx they use on them. For example, putting reverb on a sound is essentially saying “I want you to seem far away.” Do you think the sound likes that? Does that make the sound feel good?

Neighbor as a kid was an elderly Dutch lady who’d take care of me when my mom was out and she would often talk about how much she hated the Nazis, but the realize maybe it was a bit intense for a little kid so she’s go “But at least we can laugh” and then play songs on her harmonica. When/where I grew up, no one ever used the word “poser” and I’m not exactly sure what it means, especially in relation to music. Is the idea that a person only pretends to like certain music, when in fact they don’t like it? If so, I think this is a very elevated position and should be encouraged.

In the near future, when a band wants to put new ideas into rock & roll, they won’t need to hire consultants to prepare and implement an actionable roadmap. All of that will be possible to do simply using Generative AI hosted on an unobtrusive, wearable chest panel.

I hadn’t even realized that the Atlantic covers music, but it turns out they just cover a very specific niche.

Imagine if before a volleyball event they blasted some exciting sports music to get the competitors pumped up to play, like they do, but then only one of the teams was told that the music was made with AI. That team would definitely lose, even if the sports music was, in fact, entirely human made.

I just think it’s nice that people who write for the Atlantic listen to music.

When we say to just incorporate your mistakes into the music, we don’t mean when you play a wrong note. You should never play wrong notes. We mean momentary lapses of judgement, ill-considered life decisions, impulsive acts of selfishness and fundamental misunderstandings about how the world works.

Music that I listen to and immediately like is fine. That’s a decent experience and it’s ok. But it’s so much better when I listen to music and don’t like it at first but then, only after repeat listenings and thinking about it, coming to like it later. That’s the much better thing.

If you look intently at the little window on a cassette while it’s playing, you will sometimes see a tiny demon in there, smiling, enjoying the music, but also clawing mischievously at the tape, causing noise and artefacts. That’s why they put the window there.

My best tip for discovering music is don’t listen to it. That takes way too much time. As long as you are aware of the music, that counts as a discovery, so using AI to compile tables of music you can quickly scan, ideally on a 3-monitor setup, is likely the most efficient music discovery method.

I just sat through 40 minutes of jazzy hold music trying to make an appointment at the doctor and it occurred to me that if they got one of those musicians to stop playing the hold music for a few minutes and help answer the phones, the who medical practice would run more smoothly.

We like to think of cassette players as the next step forward from iPhones. Instead of “apps” in your phone, which can perform limited tasks, with cassette decks, you can load “tapes”, and these have a much more sophisticated, often life-changing, depth of functionality.

If the future, refrigerators will run totally silent. They’ll have refined the technology so that there’s no whirring noise from the compressor. But humans will find this unsettling and will assume that the fridge isn’t working, so companies will build synthesizers into the fridges so they drone.

There’s this famous music with a repetitive, looping structure and with each iteration of the loop, there’s a bit less there, like more and more is decayed away, and it has to do with some disturbing to event, the way it evokes this sombre, eerie sense of loss, but I can’t remember what it’s called…
