The current crisis in South Korea triggered by Yoon Suk Yeol stems not only from simple authoritarianism or Trump-style populism but from his weaponisation of deeply-rooted cold war "pro-North" paranoia. My latest analysis for the Guardian:

I think one of the worst takes floating around the DC blob-o-sphere at the moment is that if Lee Jae-myung becomes president South Korean foreign policy will become "pro-China." Yes, Lee will not be as devoted to the US as Yoon. But there are lots of things to consider. 1/

After that speech, it feels like the only thing standing between us and another round of martial law is the military and police’s willingness not to carry out the president’s orders. The PM and PPP leader clearly aren’t in control as they led us to believe. Yoon is still legally in charge.

Conservative media in Korea does not seem to be buying the PPP’s roadmap to have Yoon resign sometime early next year. Me paraphrasing but basically, if he won’t resign, the PPP must impeach Yoon. They say it would be a national embarrassment if Yoon is arrested for treason before being impeached.

PPP lawmaker Kim Sang-ok near tears as he talks to the media after votes on the impeachment. Says it is his duty to protect democracy even if it means being called a traitor and forsaking his future in politics. I almost never say this about Korean political speeches, but this was moving and honest.
