The modern equivalent of a heartbreaker is some game that no one has ever heard about that has amazing design principles that are innovative or elegant or just really well done, but that are languishing on itch because no one has ever thought to read it.

Sixty Years in Space has a lot of rules about what and how you can eat and drink and behave while you play.

Reminder: If you’re making a space TTRPG, your initiative system should always count down to zero.

angband in general i think breaks in the same way as most oldschool roguelikes. the early game is too hard, then it becomes about accumulating a bag of tools for countering specific threats. can you see invisible? can you resist acid? etc. but in between it touches something greater than itself.

Wondering if it’d make more sense to cut out a bunch of effort and just make a TTRPG where each player pays an artist $ for a science fantasy painting and then posts it to social media with a sentence of the form “[Pronoun] [are/am] a [Capitalised Proper Noun] in a [adjective] world [verbing].”

It’s 2025. I’m looking at the upcoming Marvel Snap data mines which includes the 3rd different Deadpool and Rocket. Second Dinner will sell me buffed versions of Thunderbolts and Guardians of the Galaxy rather than fix the cards. Meanwhile I’m supposed to get excited by new cards like Hydro-Man.

Artist has just asked me to write a description of the world in Sixty Years in Space, and because it’s procedurally generated, I coming up with sentences like “everyone looks happy but tired”.

I don’t believe the design process I do in my day job could ever be done by AI. It largely consists of writing statements I know to be true, and if I want to write a statement whose truth is ambiguous I have to establish the preconditions to ensure it is true by writing other statements.

It’s crazy how much I’ve been able to encode in the idea of “a playing card on the map represents a location”. Slope, obstacles, barriers and traps, buildings — both placing and constructing them— and building functions; the latest is what action you’re performing in a worker placement mini-game.
