This is a great example of how genAI steals from us all on multiple levels. It's stolen a promotional spot for real books and authors, it's stolen a job from an actual journalist who could have compiled this, it's stolen an opportunity for parents to be recommended good NZ books for their kids

That's literally the job. Not to read *every single* book/article but to have read enough that my thinking brain can figure out the contours of the conversation, identify gaps, look for other voices to fill them, discern how mine might be one. AI-invented sources can only slow not aid my work.

2024's word of the year was 'enshittification' was and 2025's is 'slop'. Either next year the word is something like 'encrusted' or we figure out a way to bury the garbage or use it as fuel for something more productive

A non-existent paper attributed to Ben Williamson has already been cited 42 times. It's like Scholarly Communication has been injected with misinformation bombs. Events are totally out of control. No one has a handle on its extent. And, there's no plan to stop it.

My colleague is curating a collection of CCM magazines and adding them to the Internet Archive and I am very excited about it. Here's a fun pic of Relient K from 2004

People really don't know what happens in universities and that's why it's so crazy how TPUSA et al. are trying to regulate it

This is so good. "AI citations are suspiciously convenient. They appear right when you need them, saying exactly what you need them to say."

I was just reminded that women didn't receive formal education for like a huge chunk of human history, and as a woman who has never NOT been in formal education that is so wild to me.

a seasonal research query: does anyone know of any sources on the cultural history of snowmen? what's the earliest reference we have to temporary snow-sculptures? (humanoid especially, but also more generally!)

Layers of information in an archival document: - What is said - What is not said - What is alluded to - What is omitted intentionally (and unintentionally) - What is misleading - What is ambiguous - What is highlighted - What is downplayed - What is weaponized - What is unintelligible today ...
