It occurs to me as I read comments saying Republicans have “lost their way”. Can someone really lose their morals, principles and values as easily as we’ve seen with Vance? He once called Trump Hitler. For me, it begs the question, did these traitors ever have American values in the first place?

I remember many times in America that were darker for some, oppressive and hopeless for many. I remember the one thing, the single solitary one thing that changed it was people being brave enough to stand up, speak up and risk everything. I have to remember this and America does, too.

And I have to remember a time in America when I went to it’s capitol, stood on the steps of the Supreme Court and shouted with 100s of others “Money is not free speech.” And the next day seeing private security goons blocking citizens from entering there. With Capitol police watching in disgust.

I have to remember a time in America where leaders lied to the citizens, intentionally sent young, impressionable young men to a war where we decimated countries and destroyed the ecology. But the people protested at great risk and won.

I have to remember a time in America where the head of the FBI spied on citizens, blackmailed politicians and the powerful, persecuted the LGBTQ community and perpetrated evil acts secretly. And America recovered.

I have to remember a time in America where people were turning others in as Communists, they being arrested, vilified, denied employment until finally, finally a few had the bravery to speak up. And America recovered.

I have to remember a time in America where African-Americans were shot with water cannons - and worse, could not attend schools or hold jobs or buy real estate where they wanted. But we advanced in America.

I have to remember a time in America where students were shot and killed protesting a war by our own National Guard. And we recovered.
