At non-4K resolutions, without imgui_freetype and at same size than the classic bitmap font, most fonts didn't look great enough. New font IMHO looks worse at 13px (below selection threshold) but not shocking. From 14px it looks competitively good. Nowadays most apps would default to larger sizes.

Dear ImGui now embeds a vector/scalable version of the classic font by default, manually subsetted/optimized so it fits in 18 KB (opt-out possible). Embedding ensures easily and readily usable in all contexts. Should default to new one on most setups. Here's a compare of both. #ChristmasMiracle

I don't mention this often to avoid hurting indie font developers, but: Unless law has changed in last 20 years, in the USA, bitmap fonts are not covered by copyright, only outline fonts (basically because the latter are programs). So bake game fonts to bitmaps and no license is required. IANAL.

Struggling to understand why using the bottom variant (code run once during init) would lead to a reproducible +0.6 ms on my large stress test data set for the function using it. Output array is identical. The big function using this array is opcode to opcode identical between builds.

Folks at @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social received a hard-drive image of a VAX machine. Sadly, the disk had been mostly wiped and only showed up an empty folder. I went back to the 70s VAX filesystem specs and wrote a tool to reassemble as much as possible of the files. We got some cool roms out of it.

An important contributor (who I'm sure Thekla will properly credit in the game itself) was Zachary "Jack Lance" Polansky, who passed away in 2023. I don't know anything more except Jon said he was a major contributor to the puzzles. Also, I made an unreleased Promesst 3 which is incorporated in it.

I was one of the other authors whose free games were used as a basis for this (by permission, under contract). Read the thread for details; I agree with every word Alan has written (both the positives about the game, and the negatives about Jonathan Blow).

I was disappointed to see the store page description put his name front and center while not mentioning any of the creators of the original games. This industry’s obsession with auteurs is not healthy.

That said, I hope the game will get a more nuanced label than “new Jon Blow game”. While the creative vision is his, he didn’t make any of the original games and there are a lot of talented people at Thekla who also deserve credit.

These games are the starting point, but the bulk of the game is new puzzles combining mechanics from different games together. I haven’t played the game but I have faith it will be interesting, and the world can always do with more great puzzle games.

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.

I cleared Absolum which I've been playing for the past month. Really enjoyed the progression, it starts tight, very skill-based, ends up totally chaotic, somehow happily broken. I stuck to using the same character - barely tried other play styles. Great production value.
