I just listened to a man ask me “What’s the alternative?” when I asked him to justify the negative environmental impacts of AI. The alternative is to not use it. We don’t have to destroy our planet, decimate the job market, and lose our critical thinking skills.

The only way I can stave off despair is by doing what I can. Controlling what I can control. For me, that has meant downloading and printing important resources, buying physical books and DVDs, stocking up on goods like masks, and resharing information on social media.

While sitting in a ChatGPT training for my day job, I realized that people just aren’t putting in any work themselves anymore. Example prompts given to us were write a recipe, generate a 3 month fitness plan, write me an email.

Life is short. Write that novel. Paint that painting. Try new recipes. Learn black magic. Go into the forest at night. Summon a demon. Earn that demon's trust. Become best friends with it. Brag to everyone else about your new cool demon best friend. Knit that sweater.

Libraries matter now more than ever. They stand for the powerful idea that knowledge is free and belongs to everyone. In a time when books and free thought are under threat, we must defend and support our libraries and librarians—they are guardians of access, learning, and freedom.
