It is also increasingly difficult - given few incentives & financial stability to do so - to know that you actually had something "hiding" in plain sight. No other science requires absolute depth of knowledge of all relevant work. The neglect is societal, partly institutional, rarely individual.

Collecting tons of data (e.g. specimens) is actually pretty easy. It's a lot harder making sure that it's kept safe and used well.
