Republicanism means the affairs of state are public, open to all, that all are equal before the law, and the chains of hierarchy and difference are dissolved by citizenship. Democracy means all are engaged in the public works. These are values which every nation falls seriously short.

Neoliberalism is neither new nor liberal. Social democracy is the logical conclusion of liberal democratic values, yet our liberals would rather get out of the way of the ascendancy of the right instead of making alliance with the left the pretend to be a part of.

How do we engage the public in civic virtue? There is little nothing for me to participate in. What does exist works to deliver votes to do-nothing politicians with no expectation of concessions or influence. There is no engagement that treats you like an equal partner in the public discussion.

There is much ignored work determining possible better futures & the specific mechanisms that will enable such desired futures, either because there is an idealist belief that the arc of history gravitates towards justice, or a cynical belief no better world is possible, there is no alternative.

Something the left does in fact have a problem with is creating a viable path to solidarity with people they don’t like. Is there a narcissism of small differences? Sure. There’s also an ideological culture warrior politics, and that necessarily alienates would be allies rather than defer argument.

Never forget Robert Reich said his generation did not sufficiently care about democracy, largely choosing to cash in their ballots for a hyper inflated stock based retirement account.

In the last 40 years our leaders said that markets must replace governance, and they ceded the duty to ambitious innovative leadership to the private sector. Trump’s idiot-fascism is the logical conclusion of the Reaganism/Third-Way Revolution. This is treason to our democratic republic.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion. The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion. Read that back. When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

No institutional design can overcome a lawbreaking president, a Congress defending lawbreaking and forfeiting its own power, a Supreme Court that pretends legal text doesn’t count to facilitate lawbreaking, and a citizenry that votes for all that. Need at least one that wants rule of law. Maybe two.
