🚨 Congress held NIH and NSF budgets roughly flat. Scientists celebrated. Here is what actually happened. NIH awarded 4,641 fewer grants in FY2025 than the 4-year avg. New awards dropped 14%. Over $1.3B never reached investigators. NSF awards fell 22%. The money was there.

What will happen to the 82 USFS experimental forests around the country? Many sites have decades-long experiments that are tracking how forests are changed by timber harvesting practices and climate change. As I say here, “you can't just pick up an experimental forest site and move it to SLC.”

Lots of responses here could be slightly rephrased as "I know that this famous scientist sexually assaulted you, but he knows a lot about fish so you absolutely must continue to professionally reward him or you're the problem not him."

Geosciences is at *74* total awards this fiscal year (which is now half over). Compared to 279 by the same point last year and between 330 and 440 by the same point 2021-2024. 13 grants were made in the month of March.
