Small and easy thing you can do to get started -- download your last couple of credit card statements and look through them for recurring charges. I bet you'll find crap you forgot you subscribed to and don't need! Cancel 'em! You'll hurt a right wing billionaire's feelings AND save money!

Alternatively, the cost of that small amount of road would more than pay to electrify all of New Zealand's rail lines. There'd be money left over for new rolling stock. Imagine what that could mean long term... and a huge greenhouse gas reduction.

The road works out at $154 m per kilometre. Rail is getting on for a tenth of the price per km. Which means you could build a new rail line from Auckland to Whangarei and have plenty left to build stations along the route. Given there's already a line, so it's just an upgrade, you could do more.

If you took the $4 billion budget currently proposed for the 26km Warkworth to Te Hana expressway, you could theoretically fund a massive overhaul of New Zealand's entire rail network.
