I really can’t bear to see such headlines anymore. Immigrants prop up this country and its systems and institutions. Most of them work really hard to contribute to society. They are equally deserving of a dignified life that doesn’t involve being scapegoated by politicians & media everyday. Enough!

The death penalty is never acceptable. The state should never be allowed to kill in cold blood. I don't care how much some individuals may be seen to deserve it, the state should never have that option and it degrades all citizens when such killings are carried out on their behalf.

I do personally believe that churches have the right to set dress codes for visitors, including tourists. But those should be set based on “what is respectful to the religion as practiced here” and not “what does a given security guard think might scare tourists”

I stopped paying for the BBC years ago when I released my family watched about six hours of it a year. I guess it's kind of weird to be cut off from cultural stuff like "Traitors", whatever that is, but personally I don't miss it. It was extremely poor value for us.

A little aside in Pygmalion / My Fair Lady (1912), is how the working class father, having found himself with a bit of money, ends up welcomed by the upper classes rather than the middle classes. I often wonder about this class dynamic.

The BBC platformed Farage because they saw him as the human embodiment of a certain section of public opinion. They see their role as explaining things in a simple way, ideally via the medium of a posh guy in a suit. Farage just slotted right in there, his true intentions largely unexamined.

I honestly wonder if the BBC went back to straightforward government propaganda if it would slot more comfortably into public life. At least we'd know what we were getting. And whimsical, patriotic "news" reports about how lovely London is would likely be very popular among a lot of viewers.

Mmm. I think there's something in this, but the flip side is that when they take an editorial line, it doesn't get a lot of scrutiny. Plenty of very dodgy "truths" have found their way onto they BBC. I don't think it's healthy to have so much unquestioning trust.

It seems extremely likely that these old money super rich families are out of touch with ordinary people's lives… but in a fair number of places, the UK being a prominent example, they are survivors. A handful of families have owned most of the UK for a thousand years. They do know some things.

An annual bill is clearly the most workable approach to taxing on mileage… but a few hundred pounds extra a year on top of the other costs of running a vehicle won't provide a practical path to a change in behaviour, but will land a random assortment of people with an extra bill to pay.

It really feels as though Labour want some kind of headline tax on Electric Cars as part of their rolling programme of failing to appease people who might vote Reform. Drip-feeding the media stories of cutting funding for environmental programmes also seems to fit that bracket.
