I really want to zero in on this aspect of this piece: a lot of adults cling to tech assuming that they’re meeting students where they’re at technologically, but that is increasingly not the case. More and more adolescents express sentiments like the ones here — WE need to let go.

Last week a really lovely young woman helped my parents with an app only hospital car park. Because the machines were broken and the helpline instead of saying “don’t worry, go to your cancer appt, mr 80 year old man” said “pls download an app. In the middle of Somerset countryside with no signal.

I work in a lovely school but I think there would be more home schooled children if families could see just how desperately lonely some children are all day, how isolating and hard school can be. Even in a nice school.

Last week I spent some time in a university library, on an open day. Walking through the social sciences section and pulling out books on all kinds of interesting topics. There is a joy in that - a joy that students do yearn for. But we lose it with Gen ai revision and spoon fed “knowledge banks”

It is *fascinating* to me how quickly some people have gone completely from “we all must work in the office! human collaboration is vital and only happens in person!” to “I can replace all these pesky people with chatbots!” Definitely some commentary there about our society and who gets to choose.

One thing I have noticed working in schools now is the VERY broken trust between many schools and communities. Broken mostly by silly attendance and uniform targets and apps that destroy trust. But all of it brings us closer to a usa style culture of bans, teachers fired and more

The dissonance from U.K. schools is maddening. My child can’t have her phone out in school time - to “protect her from screens and social media addiction “ So why am I being sent a consent form so an outside company can “use her image,voice and work on TikTok and other social media “

Or .. hear me out… schools could stop recommending LLM to children and we could actually educate adults on the risks and harms. My children 18,15 and 13 have all been told to use chat gpt or some other rubbish to “generate ideas” “check essays” or “write notes”. IT IS THE TRUSTED ADULTS

As a parent of teens and a young adult I am angry that no doctor told me there was a men B vaccine my children were missing. I think a lot of us would have paid for this years ago, but it should surely be offered as a school vaccination in y11?

I’m quoted in this. It isn’t a happy read but what I would say is that there is a growing student voice against edtech and ai It is easy to feel alone and hopeless but there is solidarity against all of this harm. We just need to uplift it

Schools are catalysts for online harm because of the actions of the adults who run them: obsessed with social media and “clout” I said what I said Set a better example, fix your hearts or live with the result of the mess you create

I often think about how the current generation of grads and young job seekers sacrificed so much in 2020 to keep older people and themselves safe. And now the adults refuse to support young people and are using HR ai systems to gaslight them into thinking they are unemployable
