I work in education and I am just exhausted by how my colleagues across the sector use AI as if it were some magic ingredient. Because they get told they are innovative, are never told the risks or harms. And they act as if it can’t make errors/ is confidential- think of the DATA here too..

If we had better cybersecurity and digital rights education for EDUCATION STAFF none of this dodgy edtech rubbish would get past the school gates. Schools are letting it in because no one has been trained on anything beyond “phishing”.

Many of us have warned that young people are tired and angry of graduating school or college into a world stacked against them, and where adults are using AI but blaming them for the issues. They work hard, get accused of cheating, can’t get jobs.. they aren’t going to cheer for the billionaires

I can’t stop laughing because some the biggest ai boosters are from, or still at these bug bounty companies. Look where it got them. Pushing vibe coding and telling everyone AI is so good just use it.

Now we just need to start booing these people off stage at tech and education conferences. Mock them on LinkedIn and when they talk in person. Make them embarrassed to be saying agentic. Or prompt. Or calling themselves ai experts at all.

Some students pushed back on using gen ai images in school and the educator response was “Ada Lovelace said the computer will one day create an image so that’s why we used it” Instead of being heard, invited to create future art, we tell young people to suck it up.

Something that makes me really sad about English education in mainstream is that the cruelty is not called in. Harmful people running harmful schools ( Birbalsingh) get hundreds of leaders visiting for CPD and we all have to copy the prison style methods that are hurting children.

I think this is the end of the dating app project. Now you don’t get a choice, some algorithm coded by the worst people will make your choices. Also in 21 I was part of a dating app test for a privacy group. On Tinder I was matched with men even when I hadn’t matched/used the app.

People say social media ruined us but I think it can be traced further back to the rise of reality tv. Big Brother and love Island- all shows that de sensitised us to invasion of privacy. It normalised others’ lives as entertainment, as a commodity. Or your own life as something to be offered up

I think we need a wider debate and action about the rise of recording live streams in public. People now publish doorbell cam footage, film themselves in restaurants and on the street and most of us have been in someone’s damn TikTok live. It is surveillance capitalism and we should ban it .

Heard another group of teachers discussing how they taught students to “prompt ai to generate exam questions” It is a travesty that we are allowing well meaning teachers to advocate for technology that is horrendously dangerous. But saying this gets you branded difficult.

All of this is quite deliberate: remove access to HE and make it the domain of the rich again. 2020 and years of metoo and remote work SHOOK those in power. They had to share space with marginalised people who were better than them. They want to stop that access. This and layoffs are how.

Every six months or so, we get media stories about car/edtech privacy issues. Then they go away. Because most cybersecurity education is fixated on telling people that emails are scary, or that WiFi is dangerous. I bet your work cyber education has never mentioned your car listening to you?

Be extremely wary of any discussion of “genetics”, no matter how polite it seems. Especially from the FFT whose data is used to predict student grades. The modern edu ecosystem is already sharing so much data with third parties to harm outcomes for youth. Adding “polygenic scores” won’t help

The FBI told me in 2018 that car data was so useful to them that there would never be consumer protections. Your car shares more about you than TikTok does. And the same data sharing happens with edtech, with the same problems

Two things about this: 1) terrible security comms, shows the contempt for the customers 2) no edtech would pass normal procurement checks that happen outside education. Legal and compliance teams would reject edtech for how much data it takes and shares, and the flawed design.

Education privacy and security is not taken seriously enough. Schools and universities have been encouraged for decades to adopt tech, and cybersecurity advice has been WOEFUL. - and no one really understands how serious these incidents are
