The people telling you that you should be afraid of AI super intelligence are remarkably silent on the tech CEO who bully whistleblowers, or the many invisible edtech harms, or the people jailed because of a mistake an AI system makes.

One thing I have learned is that what is meant for you will find you, and what isn’t will bring you pain until you stop trying to make it work.

When teachers tell you that there is a need for parenting support, that society is breaking down, this example proves it:parents obsessing over very young children staying up to watch JUST A FOOTBALL GAME. And wanting to take them to a PUB to do so? People look after dogs better

If other educators try to make me feel silly about not using AI, “because it is useful for work and the future”, I like to ask them “but what about Jira, workday or Slack? How about Markdown?”. They go very quiet because they realise they actually don’t know the world of work at all.

I agree with all of this except for the need to use Al tools- we can and should avoid that but I’m a minority there. We also need to stop assuming young people have consistent broad IT skills, they mostly don’t. Because we are teaching them AI prompts not how to convert a document or use data tools

What isn’t said is that children of wealthy parents are not dragged into the edtech data ecosystem as much, and if they are, they are given higher social credit type scores. Which then are shared with employers and colleges. One day this will all come out

It is a failure of safeguarding in schools that teachers are telling students to “use LLM to help you with this task” Even if you think “AI is the future”, you do not have to force a dangerous and biased plagiarism based, water consuming spicy autocorrect on young people. They are not impressed.

I sat in a meeting recently where educated, talented people were discussing how a ten year old child had taught them how to use an “ai text humaniser”, and how that could be so “useful for comms we send out”. If this had been said five or ten years ago would we have believed it ?

Teachers have been let down by unions and government on edtech harms. They have been deliberately encouraged to not consider harms, or to accept “ai ethics” platitudes as fine. So educated, thoughtful people are happily discussing AI apps that take data /biometrics and share it as if it were candy

When I was a school DPO, I remember a senior member of staff telling me that she had set up an edtech platform, shared student data- without any required due diligence- because “my husband works in tech and he read the contract and said it was ok”. That’s how seriously child data is protected.

I do hope that it has occurred to schools that they were given as many AI products as they could think of, but not AC or building modifications. And why that might be. And if they should act accordingly.

My children’s school is using some Microsoft AI reading assessment tool that I have asked to opt them out of. The school obfuscated about gdpr and recordings deleted in July, but had no reply for “what if you get hacked before they are deleted and those recordings are taken?”

If we approached edtech with the same attitude that we approach safeguarding of children, we would be in a better place. Safeguarding is the responsibility of everyone in a school. It isn’t outsourced, everyone has a RESPONSIBILITY to recognise signs of harm. Imagine applying that to classroom tech

One good thing I will say about this heat is the number of young people (and older ones )wearing hats, and even using umbrellas for shade. As a pasty person who got mocked as a teen for having hats and sunscreen, I love it. Being sun smart is cool.

Everything is awful, but one nice thing has been replacing the plastic grass with clover. It has brought bees and ladybirds to the garden within a year. It is so much nicer and easy to grow even on poor soil.
