Visual novels and Japanese adventure games. The two genres often look very similar, how are you supposed to tell them apart? Simple: if you can use a cursor to examine stuff, it's an ADV. If not, it's a VN. I'm half joking but it's honestly a pretty reliable way to identify which genre is which.

adding onto this i do think it hits its stride closer to the halfway point; the first half puts a lot of work into setup that could have been distributed better or skipped entirely since they repeat the Exact Same Things a lot, & the character reveals are where they start to shine
