It makes my skin crawl to observe that religious appropriation of new technology doesn’t seem to be about deepening relationships with the sacred or serving those in need, but evangelistic “spreading of the word.”

Open AI’s valuation is at $400 billion. They used about 190,000 books to train their plagiarism bot. Randomly saying 25% of their value comes from that stolen dataset, I think they owe the authors about $526,000 per stolen book.

These numbers should be way higher.

Ideas that begin in online communities propagate into real communities & that can be beautiful or tragic. We can't ignore people who are suffering, isolated, and purposeless. They need care and connection. My research lab is working to understand: how can we bring spiritual care into these spaces?

I assign papers on this concept in my HAI class—having an AI interrupt constantly is obnoxious and disruptive to productivity. All we can do is hope this goes the way of clippy and gets canceled. 🙄

Even in countries where few people view religion as very important, many hold beliefs in spirits and/or life after death. For example, few Swedes (7%) say religion is very important to them but nearly two-thirds believe in spirits in animals, parts of nature or objects.

About seven years ago, Nick and I wrote a Black Mirror spec where people had a personal AI device called ChooseU that helped you make the best decisions for yourself, gradually transforming you into a complete narcissistic sociopath who’d do anything to get what you want. Anyway, they’ve made that.

We ran an "Ethical Algorithms Film Festival" in my algorithms course. I have to say, we've got quite the creative bunch of CS students! Absolutely loved judging the initial 18 submissions to select 5 finalists-we let students vote on final winners. WarnerGals took the gold! bit.ly/ethicalalgos

This is one of the worst violations of research ethics I've ever seen. Manipulating people in online communities using deception, without consent, is not "low risk" and, as evidenced by the discourse in this Reddit post, resulted in harm. Great thread from Sarah, and I have additional thoughts. 🧵

Observation for #HCI / #CSCW: Rather than submitting to specific conferences, I should encourage the international students in my lab to submit to #TOCHI (etc.) so that they can *choose* any ACM presentation venue that works, even if it takes much longer to be accepted. 🤔💭💡

The promise of AI in education is it will save educators time. That's rubbish. It's sapping all our time already in working groups, committees, workshops, and marking anxiety. It's the most time-sapping, exhausting and frankly boring thing I've ever encountered in HE - and it's in my research area.
