I started Degenerate Art a year ago today, in the last weeks of the before times. Today, I wrote about the most important history and current events I've covered related to our rapidly expanding authoritarianism, and what the future is likely to bring.

Almost a whole episode of #CBCTheHouse and not one mention of the fact that there’s a for-profit arm of Canada Post called Purolator. 🤔 Also quite tired of the uppity tone about how much panelists don’t use Canada Post. Labour abusing US-owned Amazon devotees, I guess.

Canada Post is a service. Like other govt or quasi-govt services, it is not supposed to turn a profit. It needs to be efficient, but so do healthcare, the military, food inspection, schools, and other govt services. We subsidize it because people, businesses & remote communities rely on it. #cdnpoli

Canada nation built (and built and built and built) until the 1970s, then began the great dismantling. I'd pin it to Mulroney era when rails were ripped out across country & Chretien/Harris pulling out of housing funding/backstopping. Canada Post stuff is just another dismantling moment.

Canada Post “lost” 1 billion dollars last year? How about, “it cost Canadians 1 billion dollars to have a national postal service” which works out to costing about $25 a year per person (population of Canada in 2024 = 40 million). Seems like a pretty reasonable cost to me.

Makes my blood boil that Carney & the #LPC are taking down national institutions like #CanadaPost on the false premise that public services should be profitable. Gee, who does that remind me of? Starting to think Carney is just Trump-lite.

It is weird that the assassination of essentially a celebrity influencer is a bigger deal than the shooting of two top state legislators + their spouses

My condolences to the people who cared for him. Hopefully his words are some comfort to them.
