Fellow #gamedev enthusiasts and #indiegame fans, I have a project approaching release that I'm very excited to share. It's my first #oneweekdemo - a challenge I set myself to produce a prototype within a week. It's been a valuable experience - stay tuned.

It's sometimes hard to STAY FOCUSED developing your #indiegame esp. in the early stages. I try to be sparing with additions, particularly to my core mechanics. The project's final design needs time to grow & solidify, but with each new element that solution you seek must be more complex. #gamedev

In #indiegame dev I've saved substantial time by sketching. You can iterate on visual designs, draw out map layouts, write out messy notes. Even the crudest scratch pad doodles have helped my ideas flow more organically. Help yourself by exploring your designs before you touch the software. #gamedev

Make use of your past work! I'm not an #indiegame dev veteran but I do have some "archived" projects. I was able to transplant a pretty complex system into my new game and with some key tweaks it worked! Recognise those problems you've already solved, take the fixes - build yourself higher. #gamedev

As #indiegame developers our projects are both AGILE and FRAGILE. Compared to large studios and productions, we can change our designs with relative ease. But this freedom makes our projects volatile. When our plans aren't stable or guaranteed, neither is our progress. #gamedev

Experiment with game mechanics! Write down those small, fun ideas. When you have time, revisit that list, see if anything stands out the second time. Maybe it's worth a try! Make a BAREBONES prototype of your fave to try out - every test and attempt is another chance for success. #gamedev #indiedev

You can develop games depth-first or breadth-first, and as an indie dev I've learned you must adapt your approach wisely. Designing new art/environments/mechanics can be very gratifying, but adding breadth/variety doesn't pay off until you've reached the end of the critical path. #gamedev #indiegame

Try representing your complicated dev problems in a new way. Sketches, diagrams or discussion (esp. that) help give structure to the intricate, tangled systems that I find myself weaving together invisibly in my head. Data, logic and design can become so much easier to parse. #gamedev #indiegames

As I add features I try to ask: will this improve the PLAYER EXPERIENCE? technical elegance does not translate directly to a fun user experience. When I as an indie get caught in the weeds of an implementation that will only be cool to ME, l risk wasting valuable time. #gamedev #indiegame

I'm playing Pacific Drive, a game where you survive reality-bending anomalies with nothing but your wits, your prybar and a souped-up sedan. My ever-active #gamedev brain is enjoying this novel take on the survival genre. It could be called too fiddly, but I'm willing to overlook that for now.

I wonder if anyone here knows #subrosa - since I'm talking #co-op I'd like to say i think it is a massively innovative #game and I wish it had gained enough players to reach escape velocity. It faced the difficult truth that it is most fun with like 16 players - a tall order for an unusual title.

I love co-op games. In recent years I think there was a little boom in the genre? Lethal Company seemed to be quickly joined by other round-based, squad-coop games. It's a fun formula, definitely enhanced by presence/immersion - e.g. limited "proximity" communication for that sense of isolation...

I'm developing FOOL'S GOLD, a TTRPG about cowboys being transformed into cyborgs. It has been really interesting running playtests and properly understanding how useful they are. Some big changes have been made recently and I'm excited to see if they survive contact with the real world! #ttrpg #dev

I love designing and protoyping game mechanics, but when I look at standout titles (esp. in the smaller VR category) I am reminded that good WRITING is a magic ingredient for enhancing the experience. Add a healthy serving of good writing next to your fun gameplay and taste the difference.
