In NE Essex for the long weekend visiting my mum. Went for a cycle around this morning. It's so flat and there are so many communities/holiday parks right next to the seawall. Sea level rise going to be a major issue over the next few decades. I don't think building bigger walls will be enough.

Lots of the calls for a wealth tax, and for complete nationalisation of the water sector, have some issues with the actual evidence. If we want to raise billions, put the fuel duty back on and then increase each year as per for public transport. Phase in shift to pay per mile.

This is the key line about regulation of the Water Industry: “To be blunt about it, it was directed by government to take a light touch to regulation.” Structure and culture of Regulators are important but if the Govt is telling them to look elsewhere then that's always going to end in problems
