Syria being Iran's only ally among states in the Middle East had increasingly become a fiction, given how corrupt and hollowed out the Assad regime had become. Still, Iran benefitted from the geographic access [to Lebanon and to pressure Israel). So Assad's fall would be a devastating loss for Iran.
