Trump is weak at home, and he can be stopped – so long as the domestic political logic of foreign intervention is recognized and turned against him. This act of war is about regime change in the United States. It only succeeds if Americans allow it to do so.

There are a hundred more important things to say, and I tried to say some of them in my essay for "Thinking About...", but: invading a country for oil is also just atavistic at this point. Even if it worked, which it won’t, it still wouldn’t work.

This is an illegal intervention in a country that poses no threat to the United States. Trump is trying to distract from the fact that he tanked our economy and kicked millions off their health care. Congressional Republicans need to rein Trump in before he gets American troops killed.

That one person can drag us into a war without consulting or even notifying Congress, or our allies, or fully explaining to the American people why this is necessary, is absolutely bonkers. Reminder that Congress has the power to stop all of this. Where the hell are they?

If Donald Trump wanted these records reviewed and released quickly, they would be. Lawyers from other government agencies could be deployed to assist with the review. Nonlawyers could handle many of the administrative tasks. Trump could pressure compliant private law firms to contribute resources.

Congress needs to step up, assert its authority, and prevent further illegal action.

The President made a unilateral decision to strike Venezuela and take over the government. His failure to gain congressional authorization or to enunciate a strategy risks entering into yet another long term conflict that fails to deliver on our goals and is contrary to our interests and values.
