Five years ago today, physical theatre spaces in the UK were forced to go dark as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the nation and the world. I remain in awe of what creative practitioners achieved during a time of unimaginable loss and uncertainty through the will to innovate, adapt and survive /1

/2 by moving into digital spaces during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. My continued hope is that Lockdown Shakespeare, which I co-edited with @gemmaallred.bsky.social and Erin Sullivan in 2022, goes some way to capturing and doing justice to the work that took place during that extraordinary time.

Enjoyed robust debate in the Abridging Shakespeare seminar yesterday - always great to have seminar members who engage with your paper - even if my underlying argument is framed in negatives: that Hamlet doesn’t exist and the act of abridgment is better described as an act of expansion. #Shax2025
