Champions of the kelp industry have made bold claims that farming the fast-growing seaweed will alleviate the climate crisis. But those claims are not substantiated by the science of how kelp removes and sequesters atmospheric carbon. 

Also totally agree. If you want to restore, restore the environment in which seagrasses can thrive. Restore the processes!

"Mother of the Sea" Kathleen Drew Baker was a botanist at The University of Manchester that published a seminal paper in Nature that revolutionised the cultivation of Nori seaweed in Japan. Sadly forced to relinquish her academic position after marrying due to antiquated rules at the time.

Scale: How much would it cost to grow, harvest, dry & deliver farmed seaweed every day to 1.55 billion head of cattle? Ethics: The business model depends on selling carbon credits - so fossil fuel companies can claim “net zero” future emissions. Conclusion: it would be better to have fewer cattle.

A new paper by Hakai Institute researchers points to bull kelp—those long whips seen on Pacific beaches—as an “ideal” biological indicator species for marine planning efforts in the Northern Shelf Bioregion. See the full paper 🔗https://tinyurl.com/9r3bub6e

Something for #PhycologyFriday. A #Bullkelp #Nereocystis holdfast, with negatively phototropic haptera. The tips are #meristoderms that grow away from light as you would expect if you were trying to attach to the bottom! They also make a great garnish in your kelp pickles. And they’re just lovely!

A team of UVic scientists sought to understand why kelp is resilient in some areas to determine if those lessons could help to recover lost kelp habitats.
