Mrs M has (again!) deserted me for some dude named Damien Seeker. Apparently he's a tall, good-looking, intelligent Yorkshireman. The fact that I don't measure up to someone who's been dead for over 300 years is hurtful. 😭 Shame on you Shona!

Do we know what the dog was called? This is a lovely painting. My late brother had it on his bedroom wall when he was a student so it always reminds me of him.

's new book Upon a White Horse is out on September 11 & it will be terrific. This is the short opening chapter, Shrine. "The landscape seems tale-worn, shaped by legend as much as the slow grind of ice and wind: a warrior’s head on a crag....". Lovely stuff, as ever.

This reminds me of the time I told a self-described history buff that I was a historian of religion in early modern Scotland. He then asked for the title of my first book. I told him. He then proceeded to "explain" the Scottish Reformation to me. "Reformation" was in the title of said book.

And I can tell you there was a happy ending! I matched the handwriting on the card to the recipient's marriage register and then traced the groom in passenger lists. So, he returned and they married.
