Key ferry services â including Kilcreggan â will come under direct public control tomorrow. Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop confirmed the news today, saying it would mean almost ÂŁ4bn being invested over the next ten years. Transport Scotland and CalMac Ferries Limited have signed agreements which are said to be a landmark for ferries serving island and rural communities.

Happy Michaelmas Day! A traditional "quarter day", it celebrated St Michael driving the serpent from Heaven. For many communities, it marked the beginning of Autumn, with some folk stopping picking brambles today because the serpent was supposed to have urinated on them when it landed on Earth!

There were hutments in Edinburgh on undeveloped ground at Iona Street and Meadowbank. They soon became deeply unpopular, totally inadequate as anything other than short-term emergency housing, but also remained in demand as frequently there was little better, affordable alternatives for people
