Pretty confident that the Abrams lens flare™ comes from his usual Director of Photography, Dan Mindel, who got his start as a DOP with late period Tony Scott (which may be where he got the flares from lol). If you look at Mindel's other films not with Abrams they also have a lot of lens flare.

I'm glad that Sinners blowing up and being a huge hit means that no quality original movies will ever flop again and no mediocre movies will ever do well. It's definitely a sign that audience tastes overall have shifted and not just that this one specific movie resonated with people so much.
