For my non-meteorologist friends who may not get why the gutting and privatization of NOAA/NWS are so concerning, keep in mind: this is what we work day in and day out to prevent. These layoffs cannot stand.

Generational disrespect to put Josh Dobbs in with 20 minutes to go Although the Jets defense is so useless the Patriots could put a roll of paper towels under center and they'd still win by 60

A strong atmospheric river will continue heavy rain over southern CA through Fri with flash and urban flooding possible. A prolonged heavy snowfall has begun over the Sierra Nevada Mountains as well, and will continue through Fri. Travel will be increasingly difficult over the passes.

One thing that really stands out about this week's California storms is the highly unusual risk of severe thunderstorms, both overnight Tue Wed and then again late Wed into Thu. Multiple low-topped supercells may generate very strong wind gusts and even a few tornadoes.

Unseasonable warmth is forecast across a large portion of the Lower 48 this week. High temps will soar to 30-40 degrees above normal, with some areas as much as 50 degrees above normal. Dozens of daily temp records could be broken. How warm will it be where you live this week? Check

It hasn't been cold this December, but 3 years ago it got cold in a hurry. Do you remember the cold front on December 21, 2022? It was extreme in all kinds of ways, which you can read about in this blog post. Among the highlights: the temperature dropped almost 25°F in ten seconds in Akron!

Heads up for Southern California on December 24-25. The National Weather Service has issued a rare High Risk for excessive rainfall that may lead to serious flash flooding, mudslides, landslides, etc. Areas affected by wildfires in recent years will have an elevated risk given burn scars. (1/2)

Heavy rainfall will result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations this week (Dec. 22-26) across portions of California. Mud and debris flows will be possible across foothill and mountain areas, including recent burn scars.
