We know the climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. Now more than ever, it's clear we have a choice between a volatile fossil fuel economy that profits few, and a resilient renewable economy that provides security for many. And cities have already made their choice.

Fossil fuels are responsible for 75% of the climate crisis. Let that sink in. At #SantaMarta, President of Colombia Gustavo Petro called for unity among peoples, a brotherhood of different cultures, and a true mobilisation for life - because that's what the climate struggle is ultimately about.

When national governments work with local ones, not around them, the just transition can not only be possible, but unstoppable. Jean Lemire, Climate Envoy of Québec, Canada, spoke at #SantaMarta on behalf of states, regions, and cities. It's where policy meets reality, and ambition turns to action.

Transitioning away from fossil fuels is ultimately down to one thing: a choice. This truth was delivered at #SantaMarta by Caterina Sarfatti, C40 Cities' Managing Director for Political Strategy & Advocacy, at a roundtable of city and regional leaders focused on reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Cities have a crucial role in the energy transition. Caterina Sarfatti, Managing Director for Political Strategy & Advocacy, highlighted C40 Cities' collective commitment to halve fossil fuel use by 2030 as she delivered the opening remarks to the #SantaMarta conference subnational roundtable.

"Our toxic dependence on fossil fuels is generating the greatest injustices and the most severe social and economic consequences. That's why it's vital that the #SantaMarta conference is taking place now: there's an urgent need to address the security of households, nations, and the global system."

Cities are showing that a future beyond fossil fuels is possible - and already underway. From cutting demand to scaling clean energy, mayors and local leaders are turning ambition into delivery. The task now is to ensure that the transition is just, coordinated, and irreversible.
