AI evangelists are archetypal "Ideas Guys". The ones who are convinced they've come up with the best movie/comic/game concept ever, but just need actual talented people to make it for them. The inevitable lack of interest from creatives is, in their mind, the reason they've never succeeded.

I can imagine that finally being participants in the overarching reality we all live in was quite the unpleasant surprise for their self-worth.
