In a study designed with the amazing @drhelenapaterson.bsky.social, I replicated the mere exposure effect with human sentences reading voices, uncovering an unexpected state of "familiarly unfamiliar" voices processed differently to familiar and unknown voices

#AAIC25 day 2 is finished and I am physically exhausted but am also feeling curious, inspired, and excited. It's humbling to see how fast basic science has evolved in this field, and empowering to realise that my research vision is relevant, timely, and bold.

This is fun. Watching your first ever mentor in science give the plenary at AAIC. I was Katerina’s first technician, helping out with her 2002 mouse studies shown on this slide. Haven’t met a more tenacious scientist since. To see a single hypothesis all the way through to clinical trials is amazing

So much of my work now surrounds cognitive resilience and im absolutely crushed i wont be in Toronto early enough for this session!!

Ive been bringing this principle to conversations about equitable future plans recently. When those in seniority (i.e. power) are reflect privilege structures of the past, how are plans not deliberately involving diverse voices regardless of seniority supposed to escape the echo chamber?

Big fan of targeting the route cause of this because I see a concerning trend in alzheimers disease research but also aware regulating this activity at the source rather than at publishing level puts the onus on the research body - unlikely to be a popular approach no matter how necessary...

Interesting ideas! re funders helping avoid predictable ways of failing (eg reproducibility crises): in exploring schemes to apply for my fellowship, I found non-paper outputs were not often accepted (or required) evidence of contribution, but changing that could promote adoption of better practice

veerrry interested in this given how close I think a reproducibility crisis is in AD research

recognising I am not (yet) an expert in AD, I think a lot of our understanding of existing trends, and therefore prediction of future trajectories is seriously limited by the construct inconsistencies in secondary analyses in the field (yes i've got a name for this and yes I want to write about it)

I'd add "they should". Our lab's work with stroke survivors to design a virtual assistant brought up so many unanticipated observations that would absolutely have been missed if we did not engage with the community (pub coming soon, but till here's our poster till then: eprints.gla.ac.uk/333328/)

Last year, I managed the first Scottish Data Challenge, opening up #Bio-Hermes-001 to UK-based Alzheimer's disease researchers. Wearing pink as usual (it's either that or total black) I hosted the closing ceremony, which propelled me into the metascienceverse - it is now nearly time for more 👀
