Really important to avoid an expensive stranded asset. Setting dates for when the gas is switched off for areas seems sensible and ensuring this is well communicated and people get the support needed to get off gas.

EVs cannot come soon enough. Walking the kids to school today the stink of diesel engines working hard to warm up was pretty awful. Extra points as usual to the parents idling them outside the school gates.

Once EVs and standing charge is removed, mine will be very close to zero this year.

At some point next year 1 in 20 of all cars in the UK will be electric, which is likely going to be the tipping point for a lot of things as its no longer a % that can be ignored.

Businesses need predictability and the goalposts have been shifted so many times that many OEMs have standardised on the EU's 2035 target because at least they don't shift it every year or so.

I'll say it again and again, PHEVs are the danger. Inefficient gas guzzlers which promise the best of both worlds but provide the worst. Great play by the fossil fuel lobby getting them to where they are. PHEVs are excluded from some mandates, watering down targets.

A remarkable transition: Kenya is Africa's leading country when it comes to renewables. In 2000 fossil fuels contributed 60% to electricity generation. Today it is 6%. In 2023 electricity was from almost 50% geothermal, 20% wind+solar and 22% hydro.

It really is incredible to think how a dwindling userbase will tip the scales against maintaining the network and then it will become increasingly dangerous to operate it. Quite a conundrum.
